Filling in the shoes of a giant like him is no easy feat.<\/p>\n<p>And if you ask who can be the next Magnus Carlsen, the answer would be\u2026 no one. Okay, maybe his clone. Or something like MagnusAI.<\/p>\n<p>The point is making a copy of almost any human is hard. And replicating a genius is perhaps the hardest.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, let\u2019s reframe the question to \u2013 <strong><em>Who could be as dominant a player as Magnus Carlsen in the coming years?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Okay, now there are a few contenders. Some which come to mind instantly are Alireza Firoujza, Abdusattorov Nordirbek, and the Indian talents including the likes of Gukesh D, Nihal Sarin, Arjun Erigaisi, and Praggnanandhaa.<\/p>\n<p>Each of them makes a serious case for why they could become the next greatest player.<\/p>\n<p>Before we make an argument for them, let\u2019s understand what makes the Norwegian Grandmaster so special.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What makes Magnus Carlsen the greatest player?<\/strong>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0ZO28NtkwwQ<\/p>\n<p>Magnus made his argument:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unbeaten as a world champion in 5 tries<\/li>\n<li>World no.1 for 11 consecutive years<\/li>\n<li>Has the highest chess rating of all time (Peak elo 2882)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Plus, he dominated the opposition in an era where chess engines have leveled the playing field.<\/p>\n<p>I would also add that Magnus is not just a Classical World Champion but has also been the World Rapid and Blitz Champion a number of times.<\/p>\n<p>Time and time again, he proves why he\u2019s the undisputed best player.<\/p>\n<p>So who could become as dominant as Magnus?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Upcoming Stars<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13848 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victoriouschess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/alireza-firoujza-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victoriouschess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/alireza-firoujza-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.victoriouschess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/alireza-firoujza.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><em>Source: chess.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before the 2022 Candidates, Magnus had made it clear that he would only defend his World Championship title if <strong>Alireza Firoujza<\/strong> became the Challenger.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, that didn\u2019t happen. But it definitely hints at who Magnus thinks is a worthy opponent(and successor).<\/p>\n<p>Then during the World Rapid Championship in 2021, Magnus was leading the field by half a point. He was on course to win the tournament, until he faced <strong>Abdusattorov Nordirbek<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Uzbek Grandmaster defeated Magnus and went on to become the World Rapid Champion.
